Meet the Manly Dad
What is a Manly Dad? Really, the question should be “what is a real man?” Let’s start with what a real man isn’t. A real man isn’t those guys you see on TV. A real man doesn’t have low standards, shady ethics, or loose morals. A real man isn’t lazy, completely self-centered, or irresponsible.
So, what is a real man? I can sum it up with the Real Man Code. A real man:
- Honors and loves his wife and children
- Stands up for what is right
- Knows how to fix something (car, computer, plumbing, etc.)
- Has a worthy hobby (and supports his wife’s hobby)
- Laughs
That’s just a start for the code. I’m sure I’ll revisit, modify, and expand the Real Man Code over time.
What is the goal of ManlyDad.com? Remember Doogie Howser? At the end of each episode he was sitting at his computer and pound out a journal entry of his thoughts. My goal is to be like Doogie Howser. Only I’m not a teenage doctor. I’m a husband and dad in my 30′s, and I am on a quest to stay (or be more) manly. ManlyDad.com is my journal. I unload my thoughts and experiences here. I hope that you (and others) will stick around to read my adventures and contribute in the comments.
Who is ManlyDad.com’s audience? You are. Seriously, this blog is for everyone. I want people to see what a real man is or should be. I want to share my experiences in trying to be a real man. But honestly, my boys are my target audience. I hope that in 10 years or so, I can show them this site so that they can read it and relive my experiences and thoughts. This is for them so that they turn out to be better men than I.
Who is the Manly Dad? I am, of course. But if you must know, I’ll give you some biographical data:
- I’ve been married to my sweetheart since 2000
- I have two young boys
- I work for “the man” somewhere in corporate America
- I love baseball
- I hate pretty much every other sport
- I play video games, especially first person shooters
- I love technology, especially when it comes to simplifying or automating mundane tasks
- I am very opinionated…c’mon, you can’t be manly or have a blog without being opinionated, right?
